What Is BCG GAMMA
BCG GAMMA is a subsidiary within the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) whose focus is to offer clients the latest in digital capabilities, from data analytics and strategic industry insights to artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The team comprises world-class data scientists and engineers who often work with traditional BCG consultants. Some cases are 100% led and run by the GAMMA team, but most involve working jointly with BCG classic teams in mixed case teams.
BCG GAMMA teams deliver custom-built data science-based solutions. The teams create the data science models and innovative algorithms, program the software and deliver functional solutions. BCG GAMMA also trains clients to activate new solutions and provide the necessary support.
History/Background of BCG GAMMA
The Boston Consulting Group subdivision was launched in 2016 to make AI real for client organizations and businesses. In December 2022, BCG GAMMA was grouped with BCG Digital Ventures and BCG Platinion under BCG’S tech build and design unit, BCG X.
Since its launch, BCG GAMMA has partnered with traditional BCG consulting case teams to ffer advanced analytics support. BCG GAMMA teams also staff their own projects to deliver applied data science insights, machine learning solutions, and more.
Offices
BCG GAMMA has rapidly grown since its launch. Today, BCG GAMMA has a global presence with 60 office locations serving clients across the globe. The BCG subsidiary has offices in Boston, LA, Paris, and Tokyo, among other cities.
How BCG GAMMA Works with Clients
BCG GAMMA works with clients across various industries, including insurance, healthcare, consumer products, and financial services.
BCG GAMMA teams leverage their knowledge of applied data clients to identify how clients can use and benefit from AI. The team then taps into BCG’s unmatched software solutions and consulting expertise to map the processes the clients need to transform and thrive.
The digital practice believes in the 10-20-70 formula for the distribution of investments in AI projects:
- 10%: AI and machine-learning algorithms and optimization, and data analytics.
- 20%: Software and technology infrastructure to maximize AI and machine learning effectiveness, integrate them with existing systems, and scale throughout the organization.
- 70%: Consulting and project management. Developing change management clients must internalize to adopt the tailored solutions and tie everything to their business goals.
GAMMA teams first identify game-changing values in complex data. The teams then create value by pressure-testing use cases, prototyping and building Proof of Concepts, incubating the prototypes, and finally scaling the solutions across the organizations. Client organizations can also thrive when the GAMMA teams build their capabilities for continued success.
BCG GAMMA vs. BCG Generalist
Is there a difference between working as a BCG Generalist consultant and as a BCG GAMMA specialist? Yes. The difference is in the work you will be doing.
As a BCG Generalist, you will work on a wide range of projects, being exposed to, and expected to address a broad range of topics, some of which may be digital. On the other hand, as part of the digital practice, that is, BCG GAMMA, you will focus specifically on purely digital topics or the data science components of other topics.
You will be tasked with building and deploying bespoke AI-driven solutions to drive business transformation and maximize client impact. For example, the BCG GAMMA built VaxImpact, an analytics platform to enhance the delivery of COVID-19 vaccine.
BCG GAMMA Data Scientists are consultants that specialize in advanced analytics projects. These consultants generally don’t play a supporting role and may be staffed on clients on their own. In this case, BCG GAMMA Data Scientists take on “generalist” functions such as client interaction and building presentations.
GAMMA teams may also be staffed alongside generalists on generalist assignments when necessary. The GAMMA teams focus on the technical aspects of the project, while the generalist consultants handle the non-technical aspects, working together to solve problems.
BCG GAMMA teams also share similarities with generalist consultants. As a part of the BCG GAMMA team, you can expect a lot of travel time, just like the generalists. Your travel schedule will depend on your role on the team and vary by project. BCG also invests heavily in the professional development and training of its GAMMA and generalist teams. You can look forward to skill-building and mentoring opportunities.
